Regards I don't think there's much in software that is "just bad", but there's plenty of stuff that is misused in bad ways :-) The example you give is a reason why * might not give you what you expect, and I think there are others.

The comment at the end is completely wrong (in sql server at least) - the opposite happens - changes to underlying tables are silently ignored. In sql server any view using select * will need dropping and recreating when the underyling table changes otherwise it will silently not show all the columns.
